Implementing cCBT

To assist the NHS to implement cCBT, guidance is now available which looks at the following key areas:

  • A summary of the evidence for the use of cCBT
  • Key mental health conditions for which cCBT is indicated
  • An overview of CBT
  • Best practice and data
  • Implementation issues

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Programme – Minimum Data Set (MDS)

The IAPT programme has developed an MDS for common mental health needs. This consists of a number of outcome measure tools that are designed to gather data in four key domains:

  • Service User experience
  • Service User choice
  • Economic benefit
  • Clinical outcomes

The cCBT Implementation Guidance specifically refers to clinical outcome measures for depression (PHQ9) and anxiety disorders (GAD7). A useful resource is also available which discusses the use of these two tools. The quality outcomes framework (QOF) also recommends a number of useful tools for depression.

Other cCBT products

The NICE Technology Appraisal recommends the use of two specific cCBT programmes. There are, though, a number of other programmes that are available over the internet. These programmes are not to be used as a alternative to the NICE appraised products. The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) were commissioned by the IAPT Expert Reference Group to look at the evidence-base for “free-to-access” cCBT products. The report, compiled by Professor Kevin Gournay CBE, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, is available to help commissioners make an informed choice about other possible products that could complement the NICE technology appraised programmes. This report can be read in conjunction with the attached brief critique.

Demand Estimate Tool

Dr Alan Cohen and Dr John Hague of the Sainsbury’s Centre for Mental Health have developed this demand estimate tool. It is intended to give commissioners a rough estimate of the likely demand for cCBT for any given population size.

National Framework Agreement for Computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (cCBT)

The NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (NHS PASA) have now successfully negotiated a National Framework Agreement (NFA) for both ‘Fearfighter’ and ‘Beating the Blues’.

To obtain further information we invite Commissioners for cCBT, Collaborative Procurement Hubs and leads for PCT’s and/or SHA’s to contact ccbt@pasa.nhs.uk with the following information.

  • Name and role
  • NHS organisation
  • Telephone number
  • Relevant Background information

NHS PASA will then contact you to discuss the framework options and potential costs.

Details of the cCBT Framework are now available on the PASA web site.  The internet version gives the basic outline of the Framework Agreement, while the intranet site gives more detailed supplier information including pricing and a copy of the specification.
