Demonstration sites
Doncaster and Newham are the two national demonstration sites that will test the effectiveness of providing significant increases in evidence based psychological therapy services to people with ‘common’ mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, in providing improvements in health, well-being, and in maintaining people or returning people to employment and community participation.
Find out what each demonstration site will do:
Doncaster
Doncaster will provide enhanced access to low intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions. This will be provided by case managers (Graduate Mental Health Workers) under the supervision of a Psychological Therapist. Referrals will be received from a range of primary and community settings (e.g. GPs, Job Centre Plus, employers) and services will be provided both in primary care and at the team base.
In 2006/07, Doncaster will develop a comprehensive stepped care model of psychological therapy provision, including the first line services provided by Case Managers, and will have supported up to 4,500 people.

Newham
The East London and the City Mental Health Trust (ELCMHT) will provide a comprehensive CBT psychological therapy service to people presenting with common mental health problems in General Practices across the Borough. The service will be delivered by CBT-trained therapists and will be provided either in the individual’s practice or in a local treatment centre. Local employers will access the service to help people to stay in employment. The programme will be complemented by increasing access to Employment Coaches, which will be provided by Mental Health Matters (MHM).
In 2006/07, Newham will have treated an additional 800 people, developed culturally sensitive CBT interventions and a further 600 people will have been supported in seeking to return to work.
